What is Thermochromic Paint?

Thermochromic paint is a kind of special functional coating which repeatedly changes color with rise and fall of the temperature. Also known as thermochromic ink or coating, such paint is prepared by thermochromic pigments. The thermochromic pigment is prepared by using electron-transfer type organic compound system which is a kind of organic chromogenic system with special chemical structure. The molecular structure of such organic compound changes due to electron transfer under certain temperature, thus causing color change.

Pigment for Thermochromic Paint FAQs

The thermochomic paint is divided into reversible paint and irreversible thermochomic paint based on the thermochomic properties. Reversible thermochomic paint changes the color as the temperature rises and returns to their previous state as the temperature falls.

Reversible thermochomic paint has three categories due to their thermochomic temperature: cold discoloration, touch discoloration and thermal discoloration. Cold discoloration generally refers to discoloration below 20℃ (ambient temperature). It appears on the packages of cold drinks, such as beverages, ice cream, beer, etc. It is usually colorless and invisible at room temperature. When poured into a cold drink, the cup wall changes color, giving a refreshing feeling. Touch discoloration refers to the discoloration after contact with the human body. Its discoloration temperature is around 31℃. It is commonly used in accessories, temperature measuring products, children’s toys and other products. Thermal discoloration generally involves the temperatures higher than normal temperature, such as 40℃, 50℃, etc. It is commonly used on packages of hot drinks. For example, it is used on mugs, coffee cups, teacups, or electric appliances to warn the danger of high temperature.

Irreversible thermochomic paint changes the color as the temperature rises, and the color disappear as the temperature falls. However, it cannot restore original color. In general, such thermochomic paint can appear on disposable inspection products, such as electric motors, bearings, boilers and other devices, to indicate temperature and ensure production safety.

We can make thermochomic paint pigments by various methods and the common methods are as follows:

1.Chemical reaction

Mix two or more elements or compounds with different oxidation states and let them go an oxidation-reduction reaction at high temperature or by adding reaction-promoting substances to produce substances with different colors.

2.Solution co-precipitation

During the production process, mix one or more metal ions with one or more thermosensitive substances and let them precipitate in an aqueous solution to produce a thermochomic pigment.

If the thermochomic pigment paint is well preserved before use, its thermochomic effect remains unchanged after even five to ten years. Tests indicate that the number of color-changing cycles of thermochomic pigments is generally 2,000-4,000 times.

  1. Advantage

The thermochomic paint is suitable for situations under which temperature is unmeasurable. Being capable of measuring surface temperature distribution, such paint is convenient to use and does not require any instruments or equipment. Moreover, irreversible thermochomic paint can be preserved as record data.

  1. Disadvantage

Thermochomic paint is limited by usage conditions and has poor accuracy. In addition, after irreversible thermochomic paint changes color when its coating is heated to a certain temperature, the color of the paint cannot resume its original state. So, irreversible thermochomic paint is only disposable.

How long does thermochromic paint last?
Thermochromic paint changes color due to the change in temperature. According to different temperatures, there are roughly three categories of cold discoloration (around 10 ℃), touch discoloration (around 30 ℃) and thermal discoloration (40 ℃, 50 ℃, 60 ℃, 70 ℃, 80 ℃). Usually, we choose 29 ℃-33 ℃ within the range of touch discoloration.

However, exposure to high temperature for a long time may greatly damage the thermochomic performance of the pigment. The thermochromic pigments can withstand a high temperature of 200 ℃ for about 10 min in a short period.

Thermochomic paint has a wide range of applications, such as temperature indication during chemical reaction; painting of heat exchangers, reaction equipment, pipelines and motor casings; temperature indication of tanks and other devices; coating of toys, trademarks, interior decorations, clothing, etc.; especially, coating on anti-counterfeiting trademarks to make products change color by right of hand-touch heat; coating of national defense and fire protection articles, ceramics, teacups, etc. How about their advantages and disadvantages?
