What are printing pigments?

  1. Basic components of printing pigments

Basic components of printing pigments include pigments, adhesives, additives and solvents. Among them, pigments as main components account for 40% to 50% of the entire printing pigment system. Adhesives are used for binding and bonding the pigment securely onto a printing medium. Additives are used to adjust the properties of printing pigments to some extent.

  1. Classification of printing pigments

Printing pigments are divided into various categories by colors and properties. In terms of colors, they are divided into red, yellow, blue and other colors, as well as special pigments such as metallic pigments and aluminum powder. By properties, they are divided into oil-based, water-based, plastic and photosensitive pigments.

Printing Pigment FAQs

Categories of printing pigments

  1. Water-based pigments: they are usually applied in paper printing andpackage printing. They are used more and more widely as they are non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
  2. Solvent-based pigments: they are usually applied in plastic film printing and metal printing. They have high light fastness and are not prone to fading.
  3. UV curing pigments: they are solvent-free pigments, featuring fast drying, high abrasion fastness, high resistance to bond, etc. They are usually applied in coating, printing, etc.
  4. Metallic pigments: they are made by mixing metal powder and resin binder or wetting agent. They are usually applied in package printing.
  5. Pigment pulp: it is a kind of high-concentration colorless, transparent and viscous liquid. It can be applied into other pigments for darker colors or higher gloss.

Printing pigments are applied in various printing sectors, usually in commercial printing, package printing, paper printing, plastic film printing, membrane printing, stamping, etc.

Appropriate printing pigments should be used based on pigment categories, printing materials and printing methods. Oil-based printing pigments are suitable for pressure and intaglio printing, water-based printing pigments for paper and package printing, and plastic printing pigments for plastic paper, composite and metal printing, etc.

Printing ink is a kind of uniform mixture that is composed of colorant (e.g. pigment and dye), binder, filler, additive, etc. It can be printed and dried on printing media. Printing ink is also a kind of color pulpy adhesive with fluidity. Therefore, three important indicators of printing ink are the color (hue), physical properties (consistency, fluidity and other rheological properties) and drying performance. Various printing inks are different from each other in physical properties. Some of them are thick while some are not. The binder is vegetable oil in some printing inks, or resin and solvent or water in other printing inks. These factors depend on the printing stock, printing method, printing plate, drying method, etc.

  • Water-basedprinting pigments

Water-based printing pigments are environmentally friendly, non-toxic, tasteless and easy to dry, so they are widely applied in printing of lightweight packages of food, medicine, etc. In addition, water-based printing pigments are suitable for printing of various materials due to bright colors, easy fitting, etc. However, water-based printing pigments have lower durability than oil-based printing pigments. As they are easily affected if soaked in water, UV printing protection measures should be taken.

  • Oil-based printing pigments

Oil-based printing pigments are suitable for outer package printing as they are durable and not easy to peel. However, oil-based printing pigments have the disadvantages of slow solvent volatilization and serious environmental contamination, so environmental protection should be taken into account during printing.

  • UV printing pigments

Due to fast drying, high printing speed and other advantages, UV printing pigments are suitable for prints with speed and quality requirements. With high precision, high speed and high efficiency, they are especially suitable for large-scale printing of high-quality color patterns, and special safety measures should be taken to prevent UV radiation.

In short, printing pigments should be used considering printing materials, patterns, etc. Using appropriate printing pigments will have better printing effects.

Digital pigments are the most significant source of pollution in the printing industry. The global annual output of printing pigments is 3 million tons, and hundreds of thousands of tons of VOCs are emitted from digital pigments every year. Such VOCs have more serious greenhouse effects than carbon dioxide, and change to oxides and photochemical smog in sunlight, thus cause severe environmental pollution and affecting the human health. Furthermore, harmful components such as heavy metals in digital pigments for food and toy packages will directly do harm to the health of users.

The quality of printing pigments is related to the properties of raw materials and films. The properties of raw materials include the moisture content, permeability, relative density, surface tension, pH value, viscosity, fineness, initial dryness, absorption, adhesion fastness, resistance to adhesion, fluidity, etc. The properties of films include the color, gloss, coloring power, light fastness, resistance to sunlight, heat resistance, ageing resistance, etc.

Water-based printing pigments can be applied in printing of paper, cardboards, plastic films, self-adhesive stickers, etc.

  • Paper

Water-based printing pigments are suitable for various types of paper printing, including coated paper, newsprint, high-grade paper, etc. Compared with conventional pigments, water-based printing pigments can be better bonded onto paper. They have high color rendition and good printing effects, but are not easy to peel.

  • Cardboard

Cardboards are usually applied for packing boxes, gift boxes, calendars, etc. Water-based printing pigments have excellent properties in cardboard printing. They are suitable for printing of full and delicate patterns, without any pollution to the environment.

  • Plastic film

Water-based printing pigments are applicable to plastic film printing. They have lower volatility and potential toxicity than conventional pigments, so they cause less environmental pollution and do less harm to the human health.

  • Self-adhesivesticker

Self-adhesive stickers are suitable for package labels, barcodes and the like in production and logistics. Water-based printing pigments are applicable to printing of self-adhesive stickers, which can effectively reduce pollution and waste in the printing process.

In short, water-based printing pigments are environmentally friendly and suitable for extensive applications, including the printing of various materials. As the environmental awareness and law enforcement are enhanced, water-based printing pigments will be applied more widely.

As major components for print colors, printing pigments directly affect the print quality. In addition to the bright color and high stiffness, high-grade printing pigments with high viscosity will neither easily volatilize nor do harm to people and the environment.

The quality of printing pigments is key in the printing industry. At present, printing pigments have reached a new level in terms of varieties and quality. In the printing industry, non-toxic, environmentally friendly and efficient printing pigments have become the trend and mainstream. Printing enterprises should attach importance to the quality and environmental performance of printing pigments in order to make steady progress in the fierce market competition.
